
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18th 20th, 2000) is an American actress and singer. Her career spans over 40 years. A torch singer noted for her sultry, languid contralto vocals, London recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 between 1955 and 1969. The track she recorded "Cry me a river" that she released on her debut album was accepted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for 1974 due to her performance in Emergency! as nurse Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her first professional job was as an actress , while she was an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's career in acting lasted 35 years. It began in 1944 , with roles in films. They included roles as the lead female in a variety of westerns. London also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) as well as Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the middle of the 1950s, she signed a recording deal with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional career. The album she released was her last studio album in 1969, however, she continued to be a hit in the lead female character of nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency! (1972-1979), where she was a co-star along with Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
